April 28, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – The Victoria Shamrocks are pleased to announce the return of 4 veteran players to the 2014 roster, and the dates of the 2014 pre-season training camp.
Returning to the roster to defend their 2013 Western Lacrosse Association Championship are Matt Yager, Matt Flindell, Ben McCullough, and Tyler Burton.
Matt Yager, a 5’ 11’ right-handed defender from Brentwood Bay is going into his 5th season with the Shamrocks, is a part of the core of local players that have brought the ‘Rocks success in recent years. Yager brings the speed to the back end and has a talent for pushing the ball up the floor in transition and burying timely goals.
Matt Flindell, a 6’ 1” right-handed goalie from Victoria is also entering his 5th season with the Shamrocks as a part of the core of local players. Flinner is continuously showing steady progress year over year, and is one of the best pure ball stoppers in the league.
Ben McCullough, a 5’ 10” right-handed defender from Brampton, Ontario, now makes Victoria his year-round home. McCullough is in his 4th season with the Shamrocks, and is well-known as an intimidating presence in the defensive zone, and as an aggressive and physical player. McCullough was also voted CLAX defender of the year in 2013.
Tyler Burton, a 6’ 1” defender from London, Ontario, also now living in Victoria year-round, is another part of the intimidating presence in the defensive zone – a strong body who crashes and bangs through face offs. Burton has a Championship pedigree with back-to-back National Lacrosse League championships with the Rochester Knighthawks.
In addition to securing a veteran core on the 2014 roster, the Victoria Shamrocks will welcome Draft Picks Jesse King, Chris Wardle, Brandon Bull, Dane Schoor & Nicholas Stone to training camp kicking off tonight at 100.3 The Q Centre.
“The roster is taking shape. We have a strong returning core, with a number of young additions,” said general manager Chris Welch to the Times Colonist, and also hinted to more announcements before conclusion of training camp as he waits for players to finish their College or National Lacrosse League commitments.
“The young guys will have a chance to step in,” added Welch. “We’re also looking to add imports. Between now and the first game it will become very, very clear. I think we’ll have a good returning core and an infusion of young energy coming in to make us not only younger, but athletic and more up tempo.”
Training camp will be run Mondays and Wednesdays leading up to the season, and are open to the public:
