Huskies announce 23 football recruits

May 1, 2014, Saskatchewan (ISN) – University of Saskatchewan Huskie football head coach Brian Towriss announced 23 new faces to the squad for the 2014 season Thursday at the 14th Annual Dogs’ Breakfast.

This year’s recruiting class features some of the best high school and junior football players in the province and Western Canada.  These players are just some of the new athletes who will be in Huskies’ uniforms for the 2014 season.

“Spring camp gives us an opportunity to introduce our systems and evaluate and compare the incoming players with the veterans on our roster,” said Towriss.

Saskatchewan continues to add home grown talent with 19 of the 23 recruits playing their high school or junior football in the province

Looking to follow in the success of their father’s Kyle Siemens and Andrew Serke will don the green and white as second generation Huskies’. Siemens, from Aden Bowman Collegiate, was on the roster for the 2014 Canadian Junior Football League champion Regina Thunder. Serke helped the Holy Cross Crusaders to a 4A Saskatoon City Championship. Siemens father, Doug, quarterbacked the Huskies from 1981-85, while Serke’s father Travis played on the offensive line in 1986, ’87, ’91 and ’93. Doug is third all-time in career passing yards for the school with 7,153 and tops the career pass completions list at 536.

Among the local talent are Canada’s National Junior team standout Evan Machibroda (defensive line, Holy Cross Crusaders), Gabe Simons (defensive back, Luther Lions, Regina), Yol Piok (receiver, O’Neill Titans, Regina), David Singer (offensive lineman, O’Neill Titans, Regina), Brett Boechler (defensive back, Riffel Royals, Regina), Kayden Johnson (running back, LCBI, Outlook), Tom Fast (defensive back, Aden Bowman Bears), Mitch Lyons (defensive lineman, Bishop Mahoney Saints), Cole Klughart (offensive lineman, St. Joseph Guardians), Connor Bergloff (offensive lineman, Tommy Douglas Tigers)

Touted as one of the top running backs in the country, Alberta’s Tyler Chow will join the green and white. Winning an Alberta provincial championship with the Notre Dame Pride in Calgary, Chow was also the starting running back for Team Canada’s U18 team. Teammate Marco Scafidi, a defensive back, will also join the Huskies. Also joining the team from out of province is linebacker Kristian Domingo (Vancouver College) and sure handed-receiver Brett Enns (Ardrosson High School).

The Huskies add seven other former Canadian Junior Football players to the squad for 2014. Defensive end Tristian Koronkiewicz (Winston Knoll, Regina) will look to fill holes on the line after playing with the Vancouver Island Raiders. Defensive lineman Adam Morrison, defensive end Brennan Thorpe, defensive backs Chris Friesen and Taylor Rehn, as well as receivers John Trumpy and Graham Unruh all transfer from the Saskatoon Hilltops.

“We are very excited about our recruiting class,” said Towriss.  “We were able to address some immediate needs and find some skilled big body guys for the future.”

All recruits, as well as returning players, suit up in Spring Camp beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. at Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.
