May 3, 2014, Victoria BC (ISN) – The Intermediate ‘A’ Shamrocks opened the 2014 season with a pretty convincing 15-8 win over the visiting Burnaby Lakers Saturday. They were particularly dominant in the opening 20 minutes, going to the dressing room with a 7-0 lead, after which the teams played evenly in terms of offense.
Starting in goal for the Shamrocks was Liam Reid and the home team got on the board very early, Marshall King getting in close and finding twine just 51 seconds in.

Taylor Martin followed that with another on a run and then the Shamrocks took a penalty. Apparently that made no difference as they scored twice while shorthanded, Colten Merilainen tallying a 4:41 and Braylon Lumb adding another at 5:52. On a Victoria power play Brad McCulley found the back of the net with a bullet at 13:33. The Shamrocks managed two more before the period ended, David Byrne getting in close and cutting across at 17:15. That prompted a goaltender change for the Lakers, Dane Salt taking over and giving up a goal at 19:54 off the stick of Lumb giving the home team the 7-0 lead.

Victoria added a couple more in the middle frame before Burnaby got going. King got his second of the game at 1:44 from the corner of the crease and Merilainen got his second at 5:04, cutting across. The Lakers finally solved Reid at 9:21 with a 5-on-3 power play marker. Apollo Claxton replaced Reid to get some valued playing time. Another power play goal by Burnaby greeted him and the teams traded goals twice before the end of the period. Nick Preston and Martin, with his second counting for the Shamrocks and Cory Sinclair and Nick Fitzgerald replying for the Lakers.

Each team scored 4 times in the final frame, Victoria getting a pair from Alex Garson at 2:46 and 4:09, the second coming on a hard, low shot from well out. Lumb added his hat trick marker at 7:32 before the visitors scored the final 3 goals, all on power plays to round out the scoring.

All in all, for a first game in the new season, it was a strong team performance. Unofficially Braylon Lumb had the hat trick but four players – Alex Garson, Colten Merilainen, Taylor Martin and Marshal King – all had a pair of goals with King adding 5 helpers. Singles came from Nick Preston who also had 3 helpers, Brad McCulley and David Byrne. Danny Smith and Trevor Owens had 2 and 3 assists respectively.
