Vancouver set to host nine BC Rugby provincial club finals


May 5, 2014, VANCOUVER, BC (ISN) – The 2014 BC Rugby Union provincial club finals are set for Saturday, May 10 at West Vancouver’s Klahanie Park and Vancouver’s Brockton Oval.

A total of nine Cups will be lifted as senior men’s and women’s teams from across the province wrap up the 2013-14 club season. 

The club finals will kick off a busy summer of competition for the BC Rugby Union, a Provincial Sport Organization that is currently celebrating its 125th Anniversary. The Union is comprised of over 7,000 registrants with 60 member clubs.

Klahanie Park will play host to the Premier club championships featuring the men’s Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League Rounsefell Cup, Ceili’s Cup First Division, and the Women’s Adidas Premiership Gordon Harris Memorial Cup. The Premier League champion will lift the Rounsefell Cup, a coveted BC sporting trophy first contested for back in 1922.  

Each of the three games at Klahanie will be rematches of the 2012-13 season with Burnaby Lake Rugby Club featuring in each division. Burnaby are the top seeds in the men’s competitions and will face James Bay in the Premier Final and UVic Norsemen in the Ceili’s First Division Final. Klahanie Park’s upper-field is set to host a pair of fixtures with hosts Capilano featuring in both the Tier A and B Finals, against Kats RFC (Vancovuer) and Abbotsford RFC, respectively.

Stanley Park’s Brockton Oval will play host to the Women’s First and Second Division championships as well as the men’s Tier Two Okanagan Spring Brewery Leagues One and Two competitions. The winner of the Okanagan Spring Brewery League One match will earn promotion to BC’s 2014-15 Premier League. Both of the men’s games will feature second-seeded UBC against no.1 overall seed Seattle RFC. 

Defending women’s First Division champions Kamloops Rugby Club will look to hold off Cowichan Rugby Club in the Karen Moore Memorial Cup Final. The Second Division Ged Griffith’s Cup will be lifted by a new champion this year, with Meraloma and Nanaimo set to square off in the opening fixture at Brockton.
