May 6, 2014 (ISN) – The club participated in 3 provincial semi-finals on Saturday, with the women squeaking by Capilano 27-26 to head to the provincial championship next weekend.
The Valhallians went down to a well drilled UBC squad 58-20, bringing their season to a close. The 3rds also failed to advance, losing 30-10 to Capilano-B.
That leaves the Valkyries the lone squad still playing, having earned a spot in the provincial final. They head to Klahanie Park (Capilano) Saturday for another showdown with Burnaby (noon kickoff). That site hosts an number of other matches through the day, including men’s 1st div and Premier finals, and 3rd div (tier A and B). I’ll post later in the week if the club offers anything for supporters wanting to travel.
3rd Div Match Report
– written by John Lyall
The Velox Thirds traveled to Klahanie park Saturday for the BC Tier B Third division playoffs, to renew a long standing rivalry with the Capilanos. With the Valhallians at home, and many players unavailable for a variety of reasons, some valid, some lame, off we went for a 1:00 pm kickoff with 16 players. We arrived to Klahanie to see a well drilled and plentiful Caps side with former Velox thirds Noah & Rich Merinsky suiting up for them.
We opened the game with Paul Eby stepping up to loosehead, Aussie Huw at 9 and big Crotchy at 10. We controlled the opening 10 minutes through solid ball production, but realized pretty quickly that the Caps attacked the breakdown well and counter-attacked just as well. As it was, we opened the scoring off our own 22m drop out when James “MVP” Anton scooped up a kick and ran 75 m to score in the corner. We extended the lead when we realized that we could drive lineouts with aplomb, “Sloppy” controlling the skies, Richie Dark scoring his 19th try of season, a prop that can count, slightly narcissistic.
If the game ended at 25 minutes or even 59 minutes, we would have been good. Caps scored one in the first half and tied the game at 60 minutes. Great defense was on display throughout, in particular centers Brandon and Dave Jack. At 60 min, with Chad & Kenny limping off and Caps emptying a deep and good bench, Caps scored three in the final 20 to win 30 – 10.
Crotchy won the chain for the day and a courageous effort by the boys on the day. An up and down year for the thirds, some highs and some lows. Congrats to the Langford trio of Pickup, Anton & Richie for their awards Saturday night. Thanks to all trainers and all players who came out and played some Third Division rugby this year. Til next year, it is.
Saturday night’s event was a great party. Thanks go out to MC John Lyall (and his stand-in Toby), Austin Jay for the catering, Kenny for bringing his band along for some live music, and Sarah Levson for organizing the whole thing. Thank you as well to our speaker for the night, Mark Wyatt.
A bevy of award mugs were given out, including the George Jones Award, taken home by Jay Jimmo and Marlene Donaldson. The Charlton Smith award went to John Lyall for his volunteer work for the club. As for the player awards:
