May 8, 2014, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Victoria Shamrocks today announced the signings of four veteran players for the 2014 campaign.
The Shamrocks have re-upped Tyler Hass, Derek Lowe, and Mitch McLaren, while Mike Pires begins his second stint with the team.
Hass, a Victoria native, is set to begin his fourth season with the Shamrocks since joining the team in 2010. In 41 career games with his hometown club, the 6’6” transition has 24 goals and 14 assists for 38 points. In 2013, Hass dressed in 12 games for Victoria where he potted 11 goals and three assists for 14 points. The 29-year-old has played in 30 career post-season games with the Shamrocks and has collected 25 points (16 goals, nine assists). Hass recently finished his fourth season with the NLL’s Minnesota Swarm.
Lowe, a veteran of 10 years in the WLA, has spent the past two summers in Victoria after being dealt from Maple Ridge. Through a decade in the league, the 6’0” forward has played in 172 games, netting 215 goals and 227 assists for 442 points. The Burnaby, BC product suited up in nine games in 2013 where he recorded eight goals and eight helpers for 16 points. In his long tenured career, Lowe has made the post-season six times where he has 54 points (21 goals, 33 assists) in 31 games.
McLaren, a Victoria native, is entering his third full season in the WLA since being drafted by the Shamrocks in 2012. In 23 WLA games, the 5’10” transition has six markers and four assists for 10 points. In 2013, McLaren took part in 11 games and notched one assist. The 24-year-old also has four points (three goals, one assist) in seven career playoff contests.
Pires, a reliable scorer for Victoria in 2012, returns to the club after playing in just five games a year ago. A native of Saanichton, Pires has dressed in 42 career games with the Shamrocks where he has 37 goals and 54 assists for 91 points. The 6’1” forward also has 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 12 playoff games.
“These players are three important parts of our local core with the other being an outstanding veteran who sacrifices time with family and work on the mainland to play for us,” said Shamrocks General Manager & Vice President Chris Welch. “It is all about commitment and dedication, and these four guys have always demonstrated that.”
The Shamrocks have now have 12 bodies locked up for the 2014 season, including eight from Vancouver Island. Victoria also has six recent draft picks taking part in training camp, taking place at The Q Centre.

The Shamrocks are set to open the 2014 WLA regular season on Tuesday, May 20 as they hit the road to take on the Nanaimo Timbermen. The two squads will face-off again three days later on Friday, May 23 for the Shamrocks 2014 Home Opener at 7:45 p.m. This year’s home opener will be a one-of-a-kind Family Tailgate Party and Beer Garden to celebrate the club’s 65th Season.
