Brodie Smith commits to Capitals

May 9, 2014, DUNCAN, BC (ISN) – The Cowichan Capitals are pleased to announce that forward Brodie Smith (’97) has committed to the Capitals for the 2014/2015 hockey season.

The Parksville, BC, native played with his hometown Oceanside Generals in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League this past season. Smith finished second in Generals scoring as a 16-year-old with 30 points (12G-18A), along with 47 penalty minutes in 43 games.

“As an affiliate last year, Brodie impressed the coaching staff with his solid all around play,” said Capitals Head Coach and General Manager Bob Beatty. “He is a good skater, possesses solid puck skills, has good vision and was dependable without the puck. Brodie is ready to make the jump to Junior A and we are proud to have this Island boy choose the Caps.”

The 17-year-old appeared in eight games this past season as an affiliate with the Capitals. Smith recorded two assists and two penalty minutes with Cowichan while playing a large majority of the games down the stretch.

“They [affiliated] me last year and they stayed true to their word with Bob and everything he’s told me and also in their barn there it gets loud when it’s full and it’s just exciting,” Smith said on why choosing the Capitals. “This was a goal for me that I had last year, I didn’t quite make it, but I’m definitely excited for this year.”

Smith is the first commitment announced thus far for the upcoming season.
