May 14 2014 ISN – Rugby Sevens entered the programme of the FISU World University Championships in 2004 with a first edition organized in Beijing (CHN), which welcomed 159 rugby players from 9 countries. Since then, the number of participants has constantly grown, as well as the number of participating countries, reaching the record number of 273 participants from 17 countries at the 2010 edition hosted by the Portuguese University Sport Federation in Porto.

The 5th World University Rugby 7 Championship was organized in the city of Brive-La- Gaillarde, France, one of the homelands of rugby.

Rugby Canada and CIS are issuing this call for applications for male student-athletes interested in being considered for selection to Team Canada.

Please note that the selection and preparation events have been tentatively scheduled based on previous preparation scheduling for previous events. A confirmed schedule will be available once all the arrangements have been finalized.

Financial Commitment

This is a self-funded event and although sponsorship is being actively sought to reduce participant costs, it is not guaranteed. Therefore, all participants should be prepared to assume the full cost of participation, estimated at $4,500.

Selection Process

All applications are due no later than 5:00pm EST on Monday, May 19th, 2014.


Canadian athletes attending any accredited post-secondary institution (Canadian or otherwise) that meets eligibility standards can compete for Team Canada. To qualify athletes must be:

Students who are currently officially registered as proceedings towards a degree or diploma at the university or similar institute whose status is recognized by the appropriate national academic authority of their country;
Former student of the institutions mentioned in A) who have obtained their academic degree or diploma in the year preceding the event (2013).

All competitors must satisfy the following conditions:
Be a national of the country they represent
Be at least 17 and less than 28 years of age on January 1st in the year of the event.

All athletes must complete the FISU Certificate of Academic Eligibility in order to be considered eligible for the position.

Selection Criteria In addition, certain selection criteria have been identified as pre-requisites for consideration. Under these, the athletes must:

Men’s Team

Must be nominated by their university rugby program.
Provide game footage of their recent 7’s play
Provide a recent 10m, 40m, and 1600m time
