Montreal, May 15, 2014 ISN – Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) reached his fourth Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season on Thursday after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6(5), 6-4 at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy.
After losing to Tsonga at the London Olympics and again at Indian Wells last year, Raonic earned his first win over the Frenchman. Tsonga led 5-2 in the opening set tiebreak only to see Raonic win five of the last six points. The 23-year-old Canadian carried the momentum into the second set to come away with a straight sets win. Raonic hit seven aces and saved five break point chances.
Raonic will be looking to reach his first semifinal of the season on Friday when he goes up against the winner of the match between Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and Jérémy Chardy of France who upset Roger Federer in the second round.
