OTTAWA – The 2014 Canadian Marathon Championships will take place in conjunction with the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon, part of Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, Sunday May 25 in Ottawa, Ont. The Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon is one of only two Canadian events that hold the prestigious IAAF Silver Label designation.

The men’s field is led by 2013 defending champion Rob Watson of London, Ont., and 2014 Canadian Half Marathon Champion Eric Gillis of Antigonish, N.S. Rob Watson enters the event with a personal best of 2:13:29 set last season at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Rob also represented Canada in the marathon event at the 2013 IAAF World Championships. Eric Gillis has a personal best of 2:11:28 set in 2011; he finished just ahead of Rob in sixth place at the 2013 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Gillis is a veteran of two Olympic Games, in 2008 he represented the national team in Beijing, China in the 10000-metres, in London, England in 2012 he qualified for and competed in the marathon.  

The women’s race will see a new Canadian champion, defending winner Lioudmila Kortchaguina of Thornhill, Ont., will race in the 10-kilometre event Saturday May 24. Entering the race with the fastest time of 2:40:24 is Rhiannon Johns of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. She placed fifth at the recent Canadian Half Marathon Championships. Another contender in the women’s Canadian title race is Lisa Avery of Orillia, Ont. Lisa won the event in 2012, her personal best stands at 2:42:00.  

The Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon features a fast, scenic route with few elevation changes and travels through some of Ottawa’s most vibrant neighbourhoods and popular landmarks. The marathon start is set for 7:00 a.m. on May 25.
