May 20 2014 ISN – The UBC Dolphins Swim Club in conjunction with the UBC Thunderbirds and Swimming
Canada are proud to host the Mel Zajac Jr. International Canada Cup Swim Meet May
22-25 at the UBC Aquatic Centre.

2014 marks the 51st anniversary of the meet which has featured some of the world’s
best swimmers over the years including Olympic medalists Ryan Cochrane, Brent
Hayden, Ryan Lochte, Grant Hackett, Lenny Krayzelburg, Dana Vollmer, Natalie
Coughlin, and Park Taehwan.

This year’s event will feature the entire Canadian National Team as they prepare for
the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland (July 23 – August 3) and the 2014
Pan Pacific Championships in Gold Coast, Australia (August 21-25).

There will be a number of high profile swimmers to watch including two-time Canadian
Olympic medalist Ryan Cochrane, American Olympians Missy Franklin, Rachel Bootsma,
and Caitlin Levernz, as well as four-time Olympian George Bovell from Trinidad and
Tobago.

Swimmers to watch

Missy Franklin

– won six gold medal at the 2013 World Championships

– won 4 gold medals and one bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games

Ryan Cochrane

– two-time Olympic medalist (silver in 2012 and a bronze in 2008)

– double gold medalist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games

– six-time World Championship medalist

Noemie Thomas

– highly recruited butterfly swimmer for the UBC Dolphins club team

– will join Missy Franklin next year at the University of California

– finished seventh at the 2013 World Championships in the 100m butterfly

Rachel Bootsma

– won a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games

Caitlin Leverenz

– won a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games

George Bovell

– four-time Olympian

– won a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games
