KINGSTON, Ont. – Michael Ling has been named full-timehead coach of the Queen’s Gaels women’s volleyball program,announced by Leslie Dal Cin, Director of Athletics &Recreation, on Wednesday.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Ling to Queen’sUniversity as our women’s volleyball coach,” said Leslie Dal Cin,Director, Athletics and Recreation for Queen’s University.

“Michaelbrings a vast and diverse array of coaching experiences to ourprogram. He possesses an excellent volleyball pedigree, strongtechnical ability, a diligent work ethic and an infectious attitudeand passion for the game. We are excited to have him join our teamand have every confidence that he will further develop ourstudent-athletes and instill a winning culture that will allowQueen’s to be successful at the provincial and nationallevels.”

“I am very honoured to be joining the Queen’s University Women’sVolleyball Team. This opportunity means a great deal to me and Ilook forward to starting work with this team,” said the newlyappointed head coach Michael Ling. “Similar to my experiences (at Uof A), the Queen’s University reputation is outstanding and it isan honour to be a part of a university and athletic program with arich history and strong traditions.”

Ling brings to Queen’s over two decades of coaching experienceincluding the last 14 years where he served as an assistant coachwith the Alberta Pandas in the Canada West Universities AthleticAssociation (CWUAA). A consistent Canadian Interuniversity Sport(CIS) top 10-ranked team, the Pandas were CIS champions in 2007 andmost recently finished with a CIS silver in 2012.

In addition to his athlete, team and program development workwith the Pandas, Ling has been responsible for the PandasVolleyball Club, Camp and Tournament programs as well as serving asa session instruction in the Faculty of Physical Education andRecreation.

Along with his experience in the CIS, Ling also has an extensivebackground with Volleyball Canada and the Canadian women’s nationalteam programs. Currently the manager and lead coach in theVolleyball Canada Centre for Excellence in Alberta, Ling has alsoworked with women’s Youth, Junior, Universiade and Senior nationalteams during his career.

From 2006 to 2009 he served as the Canadian Senior Women’sNational Team Assistant Coach participating in the 2008 OlympicQualification Tournament, the NORCECA Championships (2007, 2008),the Pan AM Cup (2006, 2007, 2008) and many other internationalcompetitions.

Ling began his extensive coaching career at the club level inAlberta with the South East Edmonton Volleyball Club and NorthernAlberta Volleyball Club in 1995.
Ling is a graduate of the University of Alberta earning hisBachelor of Education in 2000 and is currently finishing his MBA atAlberta as well. His education experience extends to roles as ahigh school teacher, teaching part-time at the university and as aneducation officer with the Government of Canada from 2009 to2011.

He is currently certified as a Level 2 Canadian VolleyballAssociation coach and has appeared at many high performance campsand coaching clinics throughout his career.

“I feel great privilege to work with these Queen’s women and tostart this journey with them,” continued Ling. “I will work hard todevelop each student-athlete to their potential and to elevate theprogram to the next level.”
