May 22 2014 ISN – OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Thursday the hosts for a
pair of national championships over the next two seasons.
Memorial University of Newfoundland landed the 2014 CIS cross-country meet, marking
the first-ever staging of the event in St. John’s and the first time the competition
will be held in Atlantic Canada since 2005, when Dalhousie hosted the races in
It will also mark only the fourth CIS championship ever hosted by Memorial,
following curling in 2011, women’s basketball in 2007 and men’s soccer back in 1973.
This fall, the top varsity runners in the country will battle in St. John’s on
Saturday, November 8.
“Memorial is very excited to be hosting our first-ever CIS cross country
championships here in St. John’s,” said MUN Interim Athletic Director Bill Thistle.
“Preparations are well under way and we look forward to watching Canada’s best
student-athletes compete for CIS banners and medals.”
For its part, the University of Calgary was announced as the host of the 2016 CIS
women’s hockey championship, meaning the U of C will organize the eight-team
tournament in back-to-back years. Calgary had already secured hosting rights for the
2015 tourney back in June of 2011.
The U of C – which hosted CIS women’s hockey for the first time back in 2001 – has
become a regular destination for CIS events in recent years, including men’s
volleyball (2014), swimming (2013), women’s basketball (2012) and women’s field
The Markin MacPhail Centre at Winsport’s Canada Olympic Park will be the site of the
women’s hockey championship in 2015 (March 12 to 15) and 2016 (March 17 to 20).
“We are honoured that CIS has entrusted us with the women’s hockey national
championship for the next two years,” said Dinos Athletic Director Ron Wuotila. “We
have a long history of hosting successful CIS championships at the University of
Calgary, and we look forward to celebrating our campus’ 50th anniversary in 2016 by
hosting one of the marquee events on the CIS calendar. I know Coach (Danielle)
Goyette will have our team ready to go, and we’re excited to bring these events to
