May 22, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – The Victoria Shamrocks today announced the signing and return of George Westwood. Younger brother Bubba Westwood has also agreed to terms with the Shamrocks and is expected to officially join the club in the near future.

After a three-year absence, George Westwood’s comeback is now complete. The defender began his career with Victoria in 2007 where he played three years before being dealt to the Nanaimo Timbermen. George Westwood last played in the Western Lacrosse Association in 2010 when he suited up with his brother Bubba on the Timbermen.

“We are very pleased to add the Westwood brothers to our group,” explained Shamrocks General Manager & Vice President Chris Welch. “They are quality veteran players who bring a ton of grit, toughness and character into the mix.”

George Westwood, a Vancouver, BC native, resumes his playing career where it started. In three seasons with Victoria, Westwood dressed in 37 games, scoring two goals and 10 assists for 12 points. The six-foot-one defenceman also piled up 187 penalty minutes with the green and white. In 47 career WLA contests, Westwood has 16 points (four goals, 11 assists) as well as 224 penalty minutes. During his last season in 2010, Westwood tallied three points (two goals, one assist) and 37 penalty minutes in 10 games with Nanaimo. Westwood also has seven WLA playoff games under his belt where he has one assist and 32 penalty minutes.

Bubba Westwood, is set for his first season in Victoria after stints in New Westminster and Nanaimo. The 28-year-old rearguard comes to the Shamrocks with 74 games of WLA experience. During his career, Westwood has netted four goals and seven helpers for 11 points, as well as 381 penalty minutes. The Prince George, BC product played five games with the New Westminster Salmonbellies in 2013 where he compiled 57 penalty minutes. In 16 post-season games, Westwood has two goals and 47 penalty minutes. He reached the Mann Cup final twice in 2008 and 2009 while with New Westminster.

George is expected to make his 2014 debut on Friday night against his former team. Bubba’s official signing is expected to take place in the coming days with his debut slated for early June.

Victoria resumes play on Friday, May 23 with a rematch against Nanaimo at 7:45 p.m. The game is also the Shamrocks 2014 Home Opener. This year’s home opener will be a one-of-a-kind Family Tailgate Party and Beer Garden to celebrate the club’s 65th Season.
