May 21st, 2013- Victoria, BC (VIGolf.ca) – The Royal Colwood Golf Club is getting ready to host the British Columbia Golf Men’s Zone 5 Amateur Championship this weekend (May 24th and 25th) . The championship will not only crown the best amateur golfer in Zone 5, but also act as a qualifier for the 112th British Columbia Amateur Championship being played July 15th-18th at the Seymour Golf and Country Club in North Vancouver.
Zone 5 consists of the Victoria region and everything up to Duncan, which makes the field very strong and competitive every year. There are currently two Zone 5 players who already have B.C. Amateur exemptions. Those players are Kevin Carrigan of Royal Colwood, who is currently the 4th ranked amateur in Canada, and Brent Wilson of the Gorge Vale Golf Club. A third of this year’s competitors are playing the tournament for the first time, while the rest have prior experience in this event.
Glenn Bell who is a member at Gorge Vale, and is the Chairman of Zone 5 says: “Many players who are regulars in Amateur and Open events around the Island will be competing, plus about one-third of the entrants this year have never played in the Zone Amateur before! Due to declining membership in British Columbia Golf, Zone 5’s quota in the BC Amateur has dropped to 18 from its high of 24 in 2007”.
The BC Amateur Championship is open to 156 amateur golfers who are exempt or have qualified through their zone. The event is 72 holes of stroke play with a cut to 70 and ties after 36 holes. The Zone Team Championship is held concurrently with the first and second rounds of the BC Amateur. Four person zone teams are named by each zone prior to the start of the tournament. The zone team competition uses the low 3 of 4 scores each day.
New for 2014 is the “team competition”, replacing the “club team competition”. Players may make up their own 2-man teams from the field. This championship is a best ball conducted over 72 holes. The top 5 teams from the first 36 holes will be confirmed into the draw, regardless as to whether the players are in the top 70 or not.
