May 25 , 2014 ISN – DUNCAN, BC – Round one of the 2014 BC Rugby Cups Competitions kicked off on
Sunday afternoon in Duncan, with Fraser Valley defeating Vancouver Island
29-16 in the senior men¹s McKechnie Cup opener.

The win saw Fraser Valley¹s rep programs avoid a sweep at the hands of
Vancouver Island. Earlier in the day, Vancouver Island¹s senior women had
defeated defending Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup champions Fraser Valley 24-12 and
the U20 men had outpaced their Valley counterparts 78-12.

McKechnie Cup Round One – Fraser Valley 29, Vancouver Island 16

Fraser Valley came out firing in the McKechnie Cup opener, building a 24-3
half time lead and produced a strong second half defensive effort to get the
win. Fraser Valley¹s Barry Bonnell (Burnaby Lake RC) and Lincoln
Whitaker-Bowman (Richmodn RFC) recorded two quick tries in the opening 15
minutes and set the tone for the rest of the match.

³Fraser Valley took hold straight from the start,² said Vancouver Island
Crimson Tide head coach Ken Goodland. ³They took advantage of everything and
scored two quick tries. We got off to a slow start and defensively laid off
some of our tackles.²

Fraser Valley recorded five tries by the final whistle with Bayside Athletic
Association¹s Adam Timler recording a brace and Captain Cody Rockson
(Burnaby Lake RC) also going over. Whitaker-Bowman tacked on a pair of
conversions to round out the scoring.

Vancouver Island had just three points at the half, courtesy of Matt
Buckley¹s (Castaway Wanderers) boot. The second frame saw Vancouver Island
find their footing as Andrew Wright (Cowichan RC) and Aaron Frisby (Velox
Valhallians) each recorded tries. Buckley would add another penalty as the
hosts threw everything they had at the line.

³We spent most of the second half in our own 22,² said Fraser Valley manager
Mike Devlin. ³Our guys had been working on their defence and it really
showed. After the half we didn¹t have much of the ball but we still managed
to get a try out of it.²

The loss was Vancouver Island¹s second straight to Fraser Valley, as they
had fallen 25-7 in the 2013 matchup in Abbotsford.

³We fought back but couldn¹t squeeze through. We tried stuff that we hadn¹t
practiced, which happens when you start chasing the game,² Goodland added.
³There are lots of positives we can take from being down 24-3 at the half
and coming back for a 29-16 result. We will try and grab some of that
momentum and take it into Vancouver with us.²

Round two of the BC Rugby Cups Competitions will see Vancouver Island travel
to Burnaby Lake Sports Complex to face off against the Vancouver Rugby Union
on June 7th. The triple-header will see all three matches played prior to
Canada¹s Pacific Nations Cup opener against Japan at Swangard Stadium, set
for a 6:00pm kickoff.
