June 1,2014(ISN) – VANCOUVER, BC – Canadian rugby fans were treated to a spectacular performance by BC
Bears Invitational and Canada Selects teams that ended in a nail-biting 27-26
victory for the hosts on Saturday at Klahanie Park in Vancouver.

The match served as both a celebration of BC Rugby’s 125th anniversary and also as
the final tryout for the Senior Men’s National Team. Those selected will play
against Japan June 7th, Scotland June 14th and the USA June 21st.

The Bears started off flying as John Moonlight found a gap in the opening minutes
and barreled downfield but was stopped just inside the 22-metre line. The intensity
only escalated from there and Jeff Hassler opened the scoring with a try in the
8thminute after taking a great pass from scrum-half Phil Mack. The Canada Selects
were quick to retaliate as Patrick Parfrey placed a perfectly weighted grubber kick
into the end zone resulting in a Ciaran Hearn try.

Canada Selects continued to keep push forward and scored two more tries from Tyler
Ardron from the base of a scrum and Hearn off an intercept before the half-time
whistle. Gordon McRorie successfully converted twice making the score 19-7 at half

The start of the second half saw Canada continue right where they left off as
McRorie scored a sneaky scrum half pick try just minutes in. The try was converted
and Canada led 26-7. Following the McRorie try the momentum quickly changed in
favour of the Bears when Admir Cejvanovic scrambled over the line in the 50th minute
to bring the game to 26-14.

The Bears weren’t done there; in the 61st and 70th minute they scored two more tries
from Hassler and Pat Kay to lead 27-26. From there the Bears held on until the final
whistle despite great last minute efforts by the Selects. Liam Underwood had the
chance to give the Selects the victory with a last minute penalty goal from a hard
angle. Underwood just narrowly missed and Bears fans celebrated accordingly.

“We started strong in the first 10 minutes and stuck with our system but trailed
leading into the break. At half time we pulled ourselves together and were rewarded
by some individual performances by Mike Fuailefau and Jeff Hassler that ultimately
led us to the win.”

“It was good to see how players match up and develop. With the World Cup coming up
next year we’re looking for players to step up. Our team is constantly moving
