(Victoria)-June 5,2014(ISN) – The 26th annual Victoria International Track Classic is
scheduled for July 8th at UVIC’s Centennial Stadium and will feature a fun,
community mile relay challenge in celebration of the 60th anniversary of
Roger Bannister’s epic breaking of the 4-minute mile.
“The Track Classic is a great family event and this year we wanted to
attract some new spectators to the joy of running while also giving them a
chance to be inspired by our top national team athletes,” said Brent
Fougner, President of the Victoria International Running Society, host for
the event. “We’ve also added a tailgate party atmosphere prior to the start
of this year’s track meet that will feature a kids zone, live music from
Jack FM and several local food vendors.”
Interested participants are invited to register their team of 2 up to 16
for the Community Mile Relay Challenge at www.traclassic.ca and try their
hand at breaking the 4-minute mile time. A minimal entry fee of $50 for
each team will help support five local charities. Successful challengers
will receive a commemorative t-shirt for their efforts and bragging rights.
A kickoff for the Challenge will take place at tonight’s Harbourcats
exhibition game with Vikes Rachel Francois, one of Canada’s top 800 meter
runners, and three others challenging mascots Harvey (Harbourcats) and
Thunder (Vikes) to a race around the bases during the bottom of the 4th
inning. Game time for the event is 7:11 p.m. at Royal Athletic Park.
The Victoria International Track Classic kicks off with a tailgate party at
4:30 p.m. followed by the Community Mile Relay Challenge at 6:00 p.m. and
the Main Event featuring Olympians and international competition at 7:00
The Victoria International Track Classic is one of two events the Victoria
