June 16,2014(ISN) – SHERBROOKE, QC — The Montreal Alouettes announced late Sunday night that National running back Jerome Messam has been released.

The move comes just one day after the Alouettes dropped their pre-season opener to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, in which Messam did not register a carry.

The Toronto native was acquired by the Als in a trade with the Eskimos prior to the 2013 season. In 13 appearances last season, Messam ran for 565 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 121 carries.

He also hauled in 31 passes for 317 yards.

In four CFL seasons, Messam has ran for 1,882 yards and 11 touchdowns, while also reeling in 71 passes for 698 yards.

The 2011 season was by far Messam’s best, as he ran for a career-high 1,057 yards and six touchdowns with the Eskimos, earning Most Outstanding Canadian honours in the process.

Also released by the Alouettes was international tackle Charles Goodwin. The team also placed linebacker Bear Woods on the six-game injured list.
