GRAND CAYMAN – Canada swept the medals in the men’s and women’s five kilometre open water swimming races on Monday at the Flowers Sea Swim competition.

In the men’s five kilometre, Josh Zakala of Kelowna, B.C.,  took top spot with Sebastian Paulins of Brantford, Ont., second and Nickolai De Robles of Montreal third.

In the women’s five kilometre, Tessa Cieplucha of Oakville, Ont.

, was first with Brooke Lamoureux of Comox, B.C., second and Laura Johnston of Etobicoke, Ont., third.

In the men’s 10 kilometre, Mateusz Sawrymowicz of Poland, the 2007 world champion in the 1500-m freestyle, took the gold with Jon McKay of Victoria second and Liam Desjarlais of Prevost, Que., third.

Two-time world champion Keri–Anne Payne of Britain took the women’s 10-kilometre with Victoria Mock of Victoria second and Justine Rhéaume of Montreal third.

The competition was also a Canadian selection event for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships and the FINA World Junior Open Water Championships set for later this year.
