June 23,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA – Peninsula Co-op Highlanders finished their double header weekend with a convincing 9-0 victory over TSS Academy, June 22 at Hampton Park. The win is their fifth straight and keeps them undefeated in the Pacific Cost Soccer League with a 5-0-0 record.

The Highlanders jumped out to a 5-0 lead with goals from Liz Hansen, Jaclyn Sawicki, Rebecca Sparkman, and a first-half brace from Emma Greig. The second half featured Sachi Swift’s first goal of the year and a Kiara Kilbey hat trick.

“An outstanding weekend for Kiara Kilbey, scoring five goals in two halves of playing time,” Peninsula Co-op Highlanders head coach Dave Dew commented.

The home team was quick to control the pace of play with the Highlanders keeping TSS Academy trapped in their own zone early. Liz Hansen struck first for the home side as she converted a Mariel Solsberg cross at the sixth minute for the 1-0 lead. The Highlanders added to their lead on a goal by Emma Greig just two minutes later. Greig let a shot got from the top of the box that sailed over fooled keeper and into the goal. Solsberg showed off her speed with a rush up the right side before letting a sharp angle shot go. The goalkeeper denied Solsberg’s initial shot, but the rebound bounced out front to Sawicki who deposited it in the empty net in the 24th minute for her first goal of the season.

TSS Academy looked to push back with a couple offensive rushes of their own, but it was the Highlanders that would strike again. Greig registered her second goal of the half at the 32nd minute with a textbook header off a Liz Hansen corner to make it 4-0. The Highlanders added one more late in the half when Mia Gunter’s corner was redirected in by Rebecca Sparkman. Victoria held a 5-0 lead at the half.

The lead gave head coach Dave Dew an opportunity to get everyone in the game as he made seven substitutions at the break.

Kilbey continued the scoring for the Highlanders in the 57th when she received a through ball from Emma Fletcher and broke in on goal before she fired it home for the 6-0 lead. Sachi Swift added to the lead when she converted a cut-back pass from Kilbey in the 80th minute.

Kilbey rounded out the scoring with a pair of goals, one in the 83rd minute off a cross from Sarah Douglas, and her hat trick goal in the 87th minute came off a quick move to create space and a hard shot top corner. The Highlanders claimed the 9-0 victory with Tiffany O’Donnell registering her second clean sheet in as many games.

“I knew we had the potential to score in bunches with the talent we have assembled this year, and today was a breakout day for the team,” explained Dew.

The Highlanders will aim for their sixth straight win as they prepare for a rematch against TSS Academy on the mainland on Saturday, June 28
