UBCO MSOC 2011-1227181

June 26,2014(ISN) – KELOWNA, BC – The UBC Okanagan Heat soccer teams are diligently preparing for a Canada West debut this upcoming September. The 2014-15 season features 12 matches against the six other squads in the Pacific Division. Nine squads compete in the Prairie division. There will be no cross-conference league play.

Coming off their fourth consecutive PACWEST medal performance, the women are hungry to assert their presence at the next level. Having narrowly missed the post season in 2013, the men have armed themselves with several accomplished new recruits and a disciplined training regime in preparation for CIS competition.

UBC Okanagan will be accompanied by fellow newcomers Thompson Rivers WolfPack in the Pacific Division and the MacEwan Griffins will join the Prairie Division.

On September 6th, the UBC Okanagan Heat will inaugurate their CIS membership on the road in Prince George against a tough UNBC team. Entering only their third season of Canada West play, the Timberwolves will provide the Heat with a challenging yet well matched transition to the top tier.

The second weekend of competition will bring the Heat face to face with the reigning Men’s and Women’s CIS Champions the Trinity Western Spartans. With home field advantage in their first meeting and the promise of a hot summery Kelowna September, the match is sure to attract a rambunctious crowd of students and community members alike.

September 20-21 will be another challenging home field matchup when The University of Victoria and cross-campus rivals UBC Vancouver come to town. The Vikes finished second and UBC third in Canada West in the men’s division this past season while the UVic and UBC women finished third and fourth respectively in 2013. The Heat look forward to proving themselves against the long-standing CIS heavyweights.

The final weekend of conference play will feature Interior rivals the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. The traditional home and away showdown has upgraded from PACWEST friendly fire and could be a win-or-go-home scenario for either first-year team with playoff ambitions in their eyes.

The regular season will culminate on October 19th. The top four teams in each division will advance to the Canada West quarterfinals, taking place on October 25th. The top two seeds each from Prairie and Pacific will earn the privilege of home field advantage.

Men’s Final Four action will be hosted by the highest remaining seed in the Prairie division. The Women’s Final Four will be hosted by the top Pacific seed. Both tournaments are set for Oct 31 and Nov 1.

The CIS soccer season will conclude on November 6-9. The Men’s competition will be hosted by the University of Prince Edward Island while Laval University will entertain the women’s squads.
