Co-op Highlanders look to continue winning ways as they prepare for Kamloops Heat

VICTORIA – The Peninsula Co-op Highlanders will look to solidify their hold on top spot in the Pacific Coast Soccer League when they host Kamloops Heat on Sunday, July 6 at 12:30 p.m. at Hampton Park. Sunday’s match will be the first of two season meetings between these clubs.

SCHEDULE / STANDINGS

Liz Hansen’s second-half hat trick helped lead the Highlanders to their 4-0 win over TSS Academy on June 28. Meanwhile, Steph Parker picked up her first clean sheet of the season with a solid performance in goal. The victory gave them some breathing room on the top of their table with 18 points. Four Highlanders including captain Liz Hansen, Emma Greig, Kiara Kilbey, and Sarah Douglas feature in the top-ten in league scoring heading into action this weekend. With three straight convincing wins and three straight shutouts, head coach Dave Dew made sure that his team continues to play at a high standard to continue their perfect run.

“The way we have played recently has been positive in both attacking and defending aspects,” said Dew. “We have had three shutouts in a row and I am pleased with our defending thus far. We want to try and keep our undefeated streak alive and maintain our high standards of play.”

Kamloops currently sits third in the table with a 3-2-1 record and 10 points. The Heat have played tight defense all season as they have only conceded seven goals on the season. Led offensively by Taylor miller, three goals, and Heather Lloyd, two goals, the Heat are coming off a 4-1 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps FC on June 22. Kamloops will travel to Ladysmith to play Mid Isle Highlanders on July 5 ahead of their match against Victoria. With the Heat not that far behind the Highlanders in the standings, Dew stresses the importance to be prepared and ready for a strong team such as Kamloops.

“Kamloops always have a strong and well prepared team each summer,” added Dew. “They have had some mixed results and it is important that we prepare for them this weekend.”

Kick-off at Hampton Park is set for 12:30 p.m. The women’s squad will then head on the road for their final two games of the regular season against Fraser Valley Action on Tuesday, July 8 and Mid Isle Highlanders on Sunday, July 20.
