VICTORIA – Victoria Highlanders FC will hope to duplicate the success they had in their first match against Lane United when the 2014 expansion club pays its first ever visit to Royal Athletic Park, July 5 at 7:00 p.m.
It is the final regular season home match for Victoria, who will also host Glasgow Rangers FC in an exhibition friendly on July 21 at the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium.
The Highlanders and Lane met in Eugene, Ore. two weeks ago in a lopsided 7-0 Highlanders victory. Six different Highlanders tallied a goal in the contest, with midfielder Cameron Stokes notching a late brace. Brandon Watson earned the clean sheet and was instrumental in the win, making several key saves to stifle any chances of a Lane comeback in the game.
It will be the third game in a week for Victoria, who will be aiming for their sixth win of the season after playing to a scoreless draw in their previous Premier Development League fixture against Sounders U-23. The team currently sits in the third and final playoff spot in the Northwest Division with 18 points, trailing Kitsap Pumas and Vancouver Whitecaps U-23 by four and three points, respectively. Strikers Carlo Basso and Blair Sturrock lead the Highlanders with four goals apiece, while teammates Tyler Hughes and Ryan Ashlee have anchored the teams back line throughout the 2014 campaign.
After a promising start to their inaugural PDL campaign, Lane have fallen on hard times, dropping six consecutive matches through June before earning a 1-1 draw against Sounders in their latest July 2 match at Willamette University. Saturday’s match in Victoria will be the second game in a row for Lane, who will face the Whitecaps in Vancouver on Friday before making their way to Vancouver Island. With just one goal scored in their previous four games, Lane will be looking to strikers Khiry Shelton and Connor Bevans to provide on offence. The duo has provided their club with a combined seven goals this season, with Bevans’ late tally against Sounders salvaging a point for his squad while preventing a seventh straight loss.
Kick-off against Lane United FC is set for 7:00 p.m. at Royal Athletic Park. For tickets to both Lane United and the July 21 Glasgow Rangers International Friendly, please visit www.highlandersfc.ca or call 250-590-8432.
