(ISN) – Ottawa, July 6 th, 2014 – Diving Plongeon Canada (DPC) has named a strong delegation to represent Canada at the 19th edition of the FINA Diving World Cup taking place from July 15h to 20th, 2014 in Shanghai, China.

Four athletes of the nine-member team boast Olympic experience, while others have represented Canada at World Championships, World Junior Championships, and on the FINA Diving Grand Prix. The group is lead by 2013 World Championship medalists Jennifer Abel (22, Laval, QC), Pamela Ware (21, Montreal, QC) Meaghan Benfeito (25, Montreal, QC) and Roseline Filion (27, Laval, QC). With the FINA World Aquatic Championships being scheduled every two years, the 19th FINA Diving World Cup serves as the premiere event of the 2014 diving season. The world’s best divers will be in attendance competing for medals and their inclusion on the prestigious 2015 FINA/NVC Diving World Series.

Canada is looking to continue producing some strong results, as Canadian divers have won 22 international medals from 11 FINA sanctioned competitions this season.

“For this World Cup, we are targeting a medal in each of the women’s events”, says Mitch Geller, chief technical officer at Diving Plongeon Canada. “Pamela, Jenn, Roseline, and Meaghan have been regular fixtures on international podiums this season. The consistency they have demonstrated gives us a lot of confidence heading to Shanghai”, added Geller.

While a podium finish is not anticipated for Canada in the men’s events, Geller suggests that building international experience is an important step on the road to Rio 2016.

“In Shanghai we have the opportunity to observe how our emerging men do against top-tier competition. On the 10-metre platform, we saw some really great dives from Vincent Riendeau in Windsor at the recent World Series and we are hoping to see Maxim Bouchard repeat the level of performance he had at our Summer Nationals” added Geller.

The Canadian diving team will be arriving in Shanghai on July 9th to conduct a pre-competition training camp, and to acclimatize to their surroundings. Following the FINA World Cup, the majority of this Canadian team will compete at the Commonwealth Games at which the diving events will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland.
