(ISN) – Toronto, July 7, 2014 – Tennis Canada announced Monday the official player acceptance list for the 2014 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Toronto. This year, all of the very best players in the world will be competing at Rexall Centre from August 2-10 as the Top 44-ranked athletes (as of the June 23 entry deadline) on the ATP World Tour have committed to coming to Toronto.

“With one of the greatest player fields on the ATP World Tour combined with our new art of tennis theme and the exciting enhancements we’ve made throughout the grounds, we know this is going to be one of our best tournaments ever,” said Karl Hale, tournament director, Rogers Cup Toronto. “All of the top players are looking forward to returning to Toronto this year, and they will undoubtedly provide world-class action every day. Adding to the experience will be our new retail village, new food and beverage options, increased seating on the outer courts, many special events throughout the week, and more. We are so excited to provide fans with what we hope to be an unbeatable entertainment experience.”

Canadian Milos Raonic, who is coming off a historic performance at Wimbledon where he reached his maiden Slam semifinal, leads the player field. It was at Rogers Cup last year where he secured his best result in his career up to that point, becoming the first Canadian since 1958 to reach the final of the country’s biggest tennis tournament. Playing in what was his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final subsequently made Raonic the first Canadian male singles player to hit the Top 10 rankings. He is now the highest-ranked Canadian ever in singles at world No. 6.

“I’m really looking forward to coming back to Toronto and playing Rogers Cup in my hometown,” Raonic said. “There are only a few opportunities in a year that I get to play at home in front of Canadian fans and I’m eager to do well again this year. I always feel comfortable here as this is where I grew up and this is one of the best places in the world to play.”

The past 10 years of Rogers Cup have seen only four men win the trophy – the four most dominant men in tennis during that time period. Each of them will be back in Toronto this year to try and reclaim the title, including three-time and defending champion Rafael Nadal (2005, 2008, 2013), world No. 1 Novak Djokovic (2007, 2011, 2012), Andy Murray (2009, 2010), and Roger Federer (2004, 2006).

In addition, Canadian Vasek Pospisil has earned direct entry into the tournament a year after making it into the semifinals as a wild card. The 2014 Wimbledon doubles champion enjoyed his best-career singles performance at Rogers Cup last year and has since hit a career-high ranking of No. 25 earlier this year. Among the many other talented competitors heading to Toronto next month are recent Wimbledon semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov, former Rogers Cup semifinalists Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and John Isner, and Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka.

The 56-player draw will be completed with the addition of qualifiers, tournament wild cards, and Tour special exemptions. These remaining entries will be announced at a later date.

The 2014 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank will welcome the men of the ATP World Tour from August 2-10 at Rexall Centre in Toronto while the best women of the WTA will be in Montreal at Uniprix Stadium from August 1-10.
