TONIGHT’S TILT…the Mariners open a 7-game homestand tonight with the first of  4 games vs. the Minnesota Twins…also host the Oakland Athletics in a 3-game series this weekend to close out the first half of the season…coming off a 4-2 road trip vs. the Houston Astros (3-0) and Chicago White Sox (1-2)…tonight’s game will be televised on ROOT SPORTS in HD & broadcast live on 710 ESPN Seattle & Mariners Radio Network.

DID YOU KNOW?…that Hisashi Iwakuma has yet to allow an earned run in his four career starts vs. the Twins?…Kuma is 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA vs. the Twins, allowing only 2 unearned runs in 26.2 innings vs. Minnesota (2 starts at Safeco Field, 2 starts at Target Field)…according to STATS INC, Iwakuma is the first pitcher to hold an American League team to 0 ER in the first 4 career starts vs. an opponent dating back to 1914…Doug Davis was the last MLB pitcher to accomplish this holding the Dodgers to 0 ER in 4 starts from 2004-2007.

  •           2009 – Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 514th career double, tying Edgar Martinez for 39th on the all-time list.  Martinez hit all 514 of his doubles with Seattle, setting the club record, while Griffey’s 514th career double was his 331st as a Mariner – good for 2nd in Mariners history.
  •           2011 – Jason Vargas threw a complete game allowing 1 run and 7 hits in the Mariners 7-1 win over the A’s in Oakland. Seattle turned 4 doubles plays behind Vargas. Kyle Seager went 1-for-4 with a 3-run double, giving him 29 2-out RBI.
  •           1982 – Bruce Bochte of the Seattle Mariners successfully pulls off the hidden ball trick against Rich Dauer in the 7th inning of 4 – 3 win against the Baltimore Orioles.
  •           1994 – Alex Rodriguez makes his M.L. debut as the starting shortstop at Boston. Alex is 18 years, 11 months, 11 days old.
  •           1994 – Mariners hit into only the 9th unassisted triple play in M.L. history at Boston. Shortstop John Valentin turned the play. The batter was Marc Newfield, the baserunners were Mike Blowers and Keith Mitchell.
  •           2000 – John Olerud ties career-high with 5 RBI, hitting a 3-run HR in the 3rd and a 2-run 2B in the 5th inning.
  •           2001 – Bret Boone finishes the first half of the season with 83 RBI, the thirds-highest total ever for a Mariner.  Ichiro finishes the first half with a club record 134 hits.
  •           2013 – Raul Ibañez hit his 22nd home run, a go-ahead solo HR in the 5th inning to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead. Seattle went on to beat the Red Sox 11-4, with Felix Hernandez picking up his 9th win of the season. Justin Smoak and Michael Saunders each recorded a pair of doubles.

ALL-STARS AMONG USRobinson Cano (elected) and Felix Hernandez (selected) will play for the American League in the 85th All-Star Game, to be played on Tuesday, July 15th at Target Field in Minnesota…FELIX 5-TIME ALL-STAR…Felix has been named to his 5th All-Star team, tying Randy Johnson (1990, 1993-95, 1997) for the most by a Mariners pitcher in club history…CANO 5-TIME STARTER…Cano will be starting his 5th straight All-Star game for the AL…he joins Hall of Famers Rod Carew (6 straight, 1970-75) and Roberto Alomar (5 straight, 1996-2000) as the only second basemen in AL history to earn five straight fan elections.

SEAGER ADDED TO ALL-STAR TEAMKyle Seager was added to the AL All-Star team today Major League Baseball announced…as the Mariners third All-Star, marks the first time with three players in the Midsummer Classic since 2011 and first time with two position players since 2006

HOME HITTERKyle Seager is batting .357 (51×143) with 20 runs scored, 20 extra-base hits (2B-8, 3B-1, HR-11) and 38 RBI in 41 games at Safeco Field this season…has a current 10-game home hitting streak (since June 14), batting .579 (22×38) with 6 doubles, 3 home runs and 16 RBI during this stretch.

BULLPEN ARMS…over the last 2 games, Mariners relief pitchers have held opposing batters to a .031 batting average, allowing only 1 hit in 32 at-bats over 10.0 IP (3 BB/1 IBB, HBP)…overall the Mariners bullpen leads the Majors with a 2.47 ERA and leads the AL with a .212 opponent avg.

2 HITS AND A LOSS…the Mariners fell to the White Sox yesterday 1-0, with the only run scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning…Seattle allowed only 2 hits in the loss, marking the 9th time in club history to lose a game while allowing 2 (or fewer) hits…it was the first time since a 2-1 loss June 27, 2012 vs. Oakland (solo HR by Coco Crisp and Yoenis Cespedes).

FIRST HALF ERAFelix Hernandez leads the American League with a 2.11 ERA (32 ER, 136.1 IP), which is currently the lowest in club history prior to the All-Star break (min. 10 GS)…the mark Felix is aiming to better is a 2.20 ERA by Randy Johnson in 1997, who was the American League starting pitcher in the All-Star game.

GREAT SCOTTFelix Hernandez has recorded 10 consecutive starts where he has pitched at least 7.0 innings and allowed 2 or fewer runs (6-1, 1.40 ERA, 85 SO, 11 BB)…the streak is the 2nd-longest by an AL pitcher dating back to 1974 when Gaylord Perry had a 11-start streak for the Indians…he is the first pitcher with 10 straight starts of 7.0 IP, 2 or less runs in a single season since Mike Scott (HOU) in 1986.
