Race notes
Small field for tonight’s Longwood Brewery criterium, but the firepower was there in spades. In the first ten laps, first Brodie Hay and then father Iain tried to initiate a break but the Vipyrs duo were soon pulled back and at the first prime it was Pro city’s Mike Dawson beating Iain, with Steed Cycles’ Justin Mark and MIVA rider Nick Kupiak close behind. This quartette seized the opportunity to escape and soon formed the decisive break of the race. Brodie was doing a very effective job of blocking for dad an d the chase group couldn’t seem to really get going. Their failure to initiate a successful chase was compounded when Bill, McMillan, Norm Thibault and Mark Overton abandoned.
By the second prime at the halfway point, they were 55 seconds up on the bunch, with Iain taking top honours from Nick. The four continued to take 5 seconds a lap from the chase group and prime number three with twelve laps to go was taken by Justin, with Iain getting the a single point for second. The break had now been joined by Mike Gill who had rejoined the race after suffering a flat. Unfortunately, he forfeited his free lap as he joined the wrong group but he did show great ability in hanging with the fast boys.
The final prime, with jus four laps left was again taken by Iain, with Justin as runner-up.
The break had now lapped the chasers and pulled ahead to take the chequered flag well clear of them.
Iain again showed his sprinting ability by edging Justin for the win, with Mike Dawson taking third ahead of Nick.
Prime points as follows:
Iain 6, Justin 3, Mike Dawson 2, Nick 1.
