Senior runner Riva is coming off the heels of a successful race at the Victoria International Track Classic, where he edged fellow Canadian Anthony Romaniw for first place in the 800-m. Riva just missed the Canadian carding standard by a fraction but did cross the line in 1:47.02 to best a tough group.
Smith finished in sixth in the Victoria 800-m event, crossing the line in 1:51.61, while in the Edmonton race the second-year runner finished in 1:50.96. Riva and Smith are the lone two Canadians competing in the 800-m at the NACAC U-23 Championship.
Three-time CIS 600-m gold medalist Rachel Francois (St. Albert, Alta.) will compete in the 4×400-m relay. Entering her fourth-year this fall, Francois will enter the Kamloops event with a healthy list of competitions under her belt. At the recent Edmonton International Track Classic, Francois had a highlight run, finishing third in the 800-m in a time of 2:04.00. In Victoria, Francois posted a 2:03.22 time, finishing seventh overall, but had the opportunity to race along side one of her mentors and Victoria track legend Diane Cummins just before she hangs up her spikes.
At the last edition of this championship, in 2012, Canada won 18 medals – four gold, six silver and eight bronze.
