July 14,2014(ISN) – VANCOUVER, BC – British Columbia’s under-19 men’s provincial team departed for St. John’s, Newfoundland this morning ahead of the 2014 U19 Canadian Rugby Championship. BC will be looking for a rare three-peat when they face 2013 runner-ups Prairie Wolf Pack, hosts Atlantic Rock, Ontario Junior Blues, and Eastern Ontario and Quebec Voyageurs.

The U19 CRC is the premier 15-a-side youth rugby competition in Canada, featuring players eligible for Rugby Canada’s under-20 entry at the annual Junior World Rugby Trophy. The tournament also serves as a feeder to the senior men’s Canadian Rugby Championship, featuring the highest level of domestic players available for senior men’s national team selection.

The 2013 final saw BC lift the national title in dramatic fashion at Calgary Rugby Park, reversing a 13-10 deficit in the final minutes of play when Vancouver’s James Pitblado went over for the go-ahead try.

This year’s tournament welcomes the return of the Atlantic Rock after the Newfoundland-based program sat out the 2013 season.

Head Coach Kris de Scossa returns for his third straight season at the helm of BC’s U19 program. De Scossa’s roster features a number of players capped at the junior national team level including Canada U19 reps Karsten Leitner (Vancouver) and Harjun Gill (Richmond). Giuseppe Du Toit (Ridge Meadows), a rookie at UVic this past season, also featured for Canada-A during the Americas Rugby Championship in October.

“Our strengths this year are the collective culture and camaraderie we have developed as a team,” said De Scossa prior to the team’s departure. “We have great leadership in this squad and are very strong as a collective.”

De Scossa has seen the level of play improve over the last two years and is well aware his team will be faced with a tough challenge to repeat again.

“All of the teams have raised their standards of play,” De Scossa added. “There are some really good coaches at this tournament and every team will be a threat.”

All matches will be played at Swiler’s Rugby Complex in St. John’s, Newfoundland (100 Crosbie Rd, St. John’s, NL).
