July 20,2014(ISN) – The business end of the Pan American Olympic Festival Regatta started today with five Canadian crews contesting A finals.

The men’s double of Andrew Stewart-Jones and Paul Thiessen rowed a strong race to place second behind a formidable Cuban crew, which includes Angel Fournier Rodriqguez who will be a serious contender in the men’s single scull at the upcoming World Rowing Championships.

Thiessen and Stewart-Jones, who has only been rowing for two years after joining the Row to Podium program, will be joined by Alex Janzen and Ben Murphy in tomorrow’s final of the men’s quadruple sculls.

Janzen and Murphy will also be backing up tomorrow after today’s third placed finish in the men’s four with fellow crewmates Mike Evans and David Lariviere.

It was another silver medal for Canada in the women’s pair of Sarah Black and Jody Schuurman who finished just behind Argentina. Both women will be back in action tomorrow in the women’s quadruple sculls along with crewmates Kerry Shaffer and Alyssa Weninger.

The lightweight double of Lee Hall and Mark Henry couldn’t reproduce their wonderful semi-final finish from the day before to better their fourth place finish in today’s A final. The previous day, the duo had charged from fourth to second in the final 500m to secure that vital place in the A final.

Tomorrow Canada will be contesting the W1X, M2-, M4X, LW1X, W4X and M8+.
