Team Vancouver Island-Central Coast
By Cheryl Dobbie
July 19,2014(ISN) – Tomorrow’s Zone 6 – Vancouver Island-Central Coast vs Zone 3 Fraser Valley Gold Medal final at the B.C. Summer games is to both teams the equivalent of the Canada vs U.S.A. final at the World Lacrosse Games.
At the beginning of the tournament parents from both teams predicted that both teams would meet in the gold medal game. For the Zone 6 players a win would be the biggest upset of their lacrosse careers. No one can remember a time where Fraser Valley has ever lost in the gold medal game at the B.C. Summer Games. It is sure to be a very exciting game that will be talked about for years to come.
The Zone 6 Vancouver Island –Central Coast Field Lacrosse team is a force to be reckoned with. They are a dynamic group of young men who for the most part are all working towards securing scholarships to colleges and universities down south.
Team Fraser Valley
The team is coached by Sean Walmsley, who has been coaching for 10 years, and
assisted by Bryan Erwin whose coaching career started 10 years ago, when his son
(one of the two goalies for Zone 6) was 5 years old. The Vancouver Island -Central
Coast team is made up of players from the two field lacrosse associations in the
Greater Victoria area, plus Cowichan, Nanaimo and Campbell River. The team is
the best of the best from each association with 11 of the 19 players attending the
Claremont Sports Excellence Program in the Lacrosse Academy under the direction
of former Victoria Shamrocks Darren Reisig and Chris McKay. The Zone 6 boys
have had a very successful B.C. Summer Games experience thus far. They won both
of their round robin games with scores of 13-0 over Cariboo-North East, 15-3 over
Fraser River-Delta and a 17-2 win over Thompson Okanagan in their semi final
Zone 3 Fraser Valley, is coached by Ian Radonich who has been a Coquitlam coach
for 8 years. Assistant Coach Challen Rogers is currently attending Stoney Brook
University in New York and former Burnaby Mountain Select player Connor Stroup.
Team Fraser Valley is made up of players from Langley, Port Moody, Coquitlam,
Pitt Meadows, Abbotsford, Pitt Meadows and Port Coquitlam. Ten of the players on
Zone 3 are from Coquitlam which is considered a powerhouse as far as both field
and box lacrosse are concerned. They have always been considered as the team to
beat and the largest adversaries to all of the island teams.
Fraser Valley won 18-1 over Vancouver-Squamish, and 18-2 against Thompson
Okanagan in the round robin and won their semi final game against Fraser River-
Delta with a score of 20-2.
Attack Captain Brayden Brown and Goalie Spencer Erwin from Zone 6 are very
familiar with several boys on the Fraser Valley team as they have not only played
against them but with them on the Burnaby Mountain Selects travelling team a
couple of years ago. They became friends with many of the boys and in fact recruited
former BMS and Zone 3 players Chase Wright and Coleton Lundy to play on the Elite
Travelling team out of Victoria coached by Shamrock Alumni Rob Desormeaux.
The boys may be good friends but tomorrow they will put the friendships in the
back of their minds and battle until the very last second of the game. The friendships
will resume once a winner has been determined and the handshakes happen.
Tomorrow morning at 9am at the Beban Park Turf the Zone 6 Vancouver Island-
Central Coast will be “Reaching for the Star’s” and playing hard to bring home the
gold for Vancouver Island-Central Gold. It very possibly will be a huge upset just like
the Canada /U.S.A game was tonight.
