July 20,2014(ISN) – In the final gold medal game for baseball, Kootenays (Zone 1) came out firing and got an early 8 – 0 lead over Vancouver-Squamish (Zone 5). But at the top of the 6th inning with 2 outs, Vancouver-Squamish stepped up the competition.
Ataru Yamaguchi, age 15 was the first Vancouver-Squamish player to get a run, and his team-mates followed bringing the score up to an impressive 8 – 7 in the top of the 6th. It looked like a tie-game was possible but a Kootenays outfielder made a nice grab on a deep fly ball with the bases loaded.
Bottom of the 6th, the Kootenays held their score at 8 and in the final inning Kootenays managed to strand a runner at third base ultimately securing their gold medal.
“It was a really good game and I wish we could have won. It was exciting”. Yamaguchi said after receiving his silver medal. His teammate Steven Horner, age 15 (photo attached) said the tournament and this game in particular was a “great experience”.
Both teams received their gold and silver medals with smiles on their faces while waiving to their friends and family in the stands. The bronze medal was also presented at the ceremony to Vancouver Island-Central Coast (Zone 6).
