Patricia Bezzoubenko is definitely a rising star – pics courtesy of David Wardrop (ISN)
This morning my Twitter account was melting down sending me medal alert after medal alert, but rather than it being updates on different athletes the alerts were all about the same name – Patricia Bezzoubenko. The 17 year old gymnast has made big headlines here in her first Commonwealth Games. Her appearance at the Pacific Rims Championships in Richmond, British Columbia resulted in a haul of four golds, one silver and a bronze. This morning in Glasgow she looked on course for a clean sweep of six golds, especially after Wales’ Francesca Jones near perfect score in the Individual Ball Final was beaten by Bezzoubenko in style.
Jones got her own back in the Individual Ribbon Final by taking gold as Bezzoubenko slipped to 3rd spot. Five gold and a bronze is certainly nothing to be disappointed about and we should expect to see much more of Bezzoubenko’s talents in the years to come, as she said herself “I was expecting a good performance but that’s it, no medals, I didn’t think about it.”
Patricia’s coach Svetlana Joukova sounded an ominous warning for any future competitors, “she hasn’t reached her peak of form yet, but I am happy with her performance.” When she does reach her peak of form she will have to be able to cope with the weight of expectation on her shoulders.
