Australia ran out emphatic winners – pics courtesy of Andy Laing/ISN
27 July, 2014 – (ISN) The National Hockey Centre is cold and wet this morning, or as we say in Glasgow – dreich. Scotland’s women started the day with the challenging proposition of Australia and within 3 minutes they were behind to a Jodie Kenny penalty corner.
Scotland pushed for an equaliser and instead found themselves going further behind thanks to an Ashleigh Nelson effort and another Jodie Kenny penalty corner.
This effort from Flanagan struck the upright – Andy Laing/ISN
In the 2nd half Kenny added to her reputation as a prolific penalty corner scorer with a 3rd penalty corner goal, giving Australia a 4-0 advantage over the hosts.
A brace from Anna Flannagan pushed the gap to 6-0 as the hosts moved from being beaten to suffering an embarrassment in front of the home crowd at Glasgow Green.
By full time the world number 1 Australians had stretched the lead to 9-0, ex-England player Mel Clewlow summarised the match perfectly: “its just wave after wave of Australian pressure.”
