Movladdin (Arthur) Biyarslanov (Toronto, ON) defeated Musah Lawson (Ghana) by
unanimous decision, while Brody Robert Stephen Blair (New Glasgow, NS) emerged
victorious vs. Abdul Bangura (Sierra Leonne).
Cycling – Track
Three Canadians competed in the Women’s Scratch Race, Jasmin Glaesser (Coquitlam,
BC) – 10th, Laura Brown (Vancouver, BC) – 18th and Stephanie Roorda (Vancouver, BC)
– 16th. Vincent de Haitre (Cumberland, ON) finished 7th in the 1000m Time Trial,
while Zach Bell (Watson Lake, YT) finished 5th in the Men’s Points Race.
The Men’s team was defeated by Malaysia by a 2-0 score.
Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi (Quebec, QC) won bronze in the 78kg women’s event. In the
over 100kg weight-class Martin Rygielski (St. Clements, ON) did not win his
preliminary bouts. Sophie Vaillancourt (Wotton, QC) in the 78kg weight-class, did
not progress out of the preliminaries.
In lawn bowls action today, three out of Canadian entries won their matches. Kelly
McKerihan (Toronto, Ont.) won 21-13 over South Africa’s Colleen Piketh in women’s
singles, while men’s triples (Kevin Jones (London, Ont.), Chris Stadnyk (Niagara
Falls, Ont.), Tim Mason (Penetanguishene, Ont.) defeated Zambia 16-13. The women’s
fours (Leanne Chinery (Victoria, B.C.), Laura Hawryzsko (Cobourg, Ont.), Jackie
Foster (Bridgetown, N.S.) and Mary Ann Beath (Vancouver, B.C.) won 14-13 over
Norfolk Island, while the men’s pairs of Ryan Bester (Hanover, Ont. and George
Whitelaw (Victoria, B.C.) lost 15-22 to Northern Ireland. No Canadian lawn bowlers
advanced to the medal rounds in these events. However, there will be additional lawn
bowls medal chances coming up in other events.
Patricia Bezzoubenko (Vaughan, ON) medaled in all four events, taking Gold in the
Hoop, Ball and Clubs, and Bronze in the Ribbon. Maria Kitkarska (Montreal, QC)
finished 8th in the Ball, 6th in Clubs and 6th in Ribbon.
The Canadians dropped their first match of the day 39-0 to the defending champion
from New Zealand. In their second game, they defeated Barbados 68-5. The third and
final match saw the Canadians lose to Scotland 21-5, taking them out of medal
In the Fullbore Rifle Queens Prize (Pair), James Paton (White Rock, BC) and Desmond
Vamplew (Toronto, ON) emerged with the silver medal.
In the Finals on Saturday evening, the Canadian 4 X 200m Freestyle Women – Samanth
Cheverton (Montreal, QC), Brittany MacLean (Toronto, ON), Alyson Ackman (Pembroke,
ON), Emily Overholt (West Vancouver, BC) emerged with a silver medal. Other finals
– 50m Freestyle: Victoria Poon (LaSalle, QC) – 6th
– 200m Breaststroke: Kierra Smith (Kelowna, BC) – 4th, Martha McCabe (Toronto, ON)
– 100m Backstroke: Brooklyn Snodgrass (Calgary, AB) – 8th, Sinead Russell
(Burlington – ON) – 6th
– 100m Breaststroke: Richard Funk (Edmonton, AB) – 6th
In women’s table tennis quarterfinals Saturday morning, it took just an hour for No.
1 ranked Singapore to defeat the Canadian team 3-0 (3:0, 3:0, 3:0). The Canadian
team is Betty Guo (Edmonton, Alta.), Anqi Luo (Mississauga, Ont.) and Mo Zhang
Canada’s men’s table tennis team was eliminated Friday in preliminary rounds. Both
men’s and women’s Canadian squads now have a few days off before singles competition
begins July 29, mixed doubles begins July 30 and men’s and women’s doubles begins
The Canadian Mixed Relay Team finished outside the podium in 4th place, just three
seconds outside of the bronze medal.
In Weightlifting, Francis Luna-Grenier (Montreal, QC) finished 4th at 69kg while
Nicolas Vachon (Saint-Jerome, QC) was 13th in the same category. Isabelle Despres
(Cocagne, NB) was 9th in the 58kg, with Marie-Julie Malboeuf (Repentigny, QC)
