Day 5 recap of UBC athletes at the Commonwealth Games

VANCOUVER – UBC Thunderbirds swimmer Tera Van Beilen finished sixth in the women’s 100-metre breaststroke final at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Oakville, Ont., native completed the race in one minute and 8.58 seconds. It was the second event final for the Kinesiology student at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Van Beilen placed fifth in the 50-m breaststroke on July 25.


In semifinal action, Calgary’s Yuri Kisil, an 18-year-old who will be starting at UBC in the fall, just missed the men’s 50-m freestyle final by 0.02, finishing ninth at 22.57.
Former UBC high jump star Mike Mason of Parksville began his journey to a Commonwealth Games medal on Monday at Hampden Park. He finished in a tie for first in his group during the men’s high jump qualification round. Mason had a best jump of 2.20 metres to qualify for the 13-man final on July 30.
