Fettig-Winn and Janssens row to World U23 bronze


July 27,2014(ISN) – VANCOUVER – Zoe Fettig-Winn and Hillary Janssens helped Canada win a bronze medal at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Varese, Italy on Saturday.

The UBC Thunderbirds rowers were part of the Canadian women’s four team that placed third in the event final behind the United States and New Zealand, respectively.

Fettig-Winn, sitting in the bow, and Janssens (seat 3) teamed up with Nicole Hare (stroke) and Michelle Aylard (seat 2) to cross the finish line in six minutes and 47.42 seconds. The US won with a time of 6:43.24.

Canada was third after the first 500 metres but moved up to second by the halfway mark. They were still in the silver medal position at 1,500 metres but were overtaken in the final half kilometre.

Fettig-Winn is a third-year (going into fourth year) Kinesiology student from Victoria while Janssens is a second-year (entering third) Science student from Surrey.
