28 July, 2014 (ISN) Laura Trott, double gold medallist for Team GB at London 2012 won gold today in the women’s 25km points race final.
Speaking after the race she said: “This means so much, it’s unbelievable. I was disappointed at the start of the week to be ill but I woke up this morning and was able to eat two meals so I knew today was going to be a good day.”
She was asked how hard was it to battle through the illness and to know that she just couldn’t perform. She replied, “As an athlete we know we’re going to get ill, with our training we peak and are almost tipping over into being ill. It’s the first time its happened to me at a major competition and I guess its set me up for if it does happen at Rio for example and made me realise that I should just relax and get better, which I did”
Despite having won two golds at London 2012 she felt that this win was just as important, “After the week I’ve had its right up with the Olympics, the atmosphere makes it feel like a home game”
Now that the track competition is finished Laura is heading home to relax before returning to Glasgow to work with Lizzie Armstead on the road races.
