Seedings Announced for Rogers Cup

Toronto, July 28, 2014 – Tennis Canada announced on Monday the seedings for the 2014 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Montreal and Toronto. The two world No. 1 players will be the top seeds at both tournaments, with Novak Djokovic competing in Toronto and Serena Williams in Montreal. Both athletes are three-time Rogers Cup champions, with Williams set to defend her title from last year. The seedings follow the official ATP World Tour and WTA rankings released on Monday, July 28, with the two events each featuring 15 of the Top 16-ranked players.

In addition to Djokovic and Williams, two Canadian stars will be seeded. Milos Raonic will be seeded at Rogers Cup for the third straight year and is the No. 7 seed in Toronto, while Eugenie Bouchard will sit in the No. 6 position in Montreal’s draw. As Top 8 seeds, both Raonic and Bouchard will receive first-round byes.

“This year is shaping up to be one of our best yet with all of the top players arriving in Toronto in peak form,” said Karl Hale, tournament director, Rogers Cup Toronto. “The players really take our tournament seriously and our world-class seedings list illustrates that perfectly. With such an extraordinary field of athletes, we are looking forward to seeing them finally take the court and we hope our fans enjoy what is sure-to-be an amazing week of tennis.”

“We are very excited for this year’s tournament and that excitement has spread throughout all of Montreal,” said Eugene Lapierre, tournament director, Rogers Cup Montreal. “With the best players in the world, including Montreal’s own Eugenie Bouchard, here in town this year we know our fans are going to witness incredible tennis every single day. We can’t wait for the tournament to start.”

The No. 2 seeds will be defending champion Rafael Nadal in Toronto and Li Na in Montreal, who will be placed on the opposite sides of the draw from Djokovic and Williams. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will also be placed on different halves, with the remaining seeds to be dropped into the draw at random. The official draw for Rogers Cup Toronto will take place on Friday, August 1 at 4 p.m. at Queen’s Park while Rogers Cup Montreal will conduct its official draw shortly thereafter on Friday at 5:15 p.m. on-site at Uniprix Stadium.

Other top seeds of note in Toronto include 17-time Slam champion Roger Federer at No. 3 and two-time Rogers Cup winner Andy Murray at No. 9, while in Montreal other seeded players include Wimbledon champion and 2012 Rogers Cup winner Petra Kvitova at No. 3 and five-time Slam victor Maria Sharapova at No. 5.

World No. 8 Juan Martin Del Potro has also officially withdrawn from Rogers Cup in Toronto due to his ongoing recovery from wrist surgery, which moves Wimbledon semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov into the No. 8 spot where he will receive a first-round bye.

Rogers Cup presented by National Bank will take place August 2-10 at Rexall Centre in Toronto and from August 1-10 at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal.
