July 29,2014(ISN) – VICTORIA – University of Victoria Vikes women’s rugby players, Kara Galbraith and Laura Crowe-Hutchon are already getting ready to gear up for the Vikes in the fall. The duo will be competing for the British Columbia senior women’s team in the National Women’s league (NWL) finals starting today, July 29, in Ottawa, Ont.
“Laura and Kara are both outstanding players and they will benefit the BC team enormously”, said Vikes women’s rugby head coach Mark Hall. “Kara is a very deceptive runner and tackler and Laura is as good as any we get in the CIS league”.
In addition, Hall stresses that tournaments like the NWL finals will be extremely valuable, as their experience gained will benefit the team tremendously when the Vikes return to campus to prepare for their fall campaign.
“We will have a many new players next season, some with lots of experience and some without, so their summer training will definitely strengthen the team”.
The NWL finals offers a pathway to the primary selection of the senior women’s national program and with many national team players unavailable to play due to the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup starting later this week, the tournament offers Galbraith and Crowe-Hutchon a chance to shine.
British Columbia, who finished third overall last year, will play four games in six days in a round-robin style tournament that starts tomorrow, July 29. Their first game is against the defending champions Quebec, followed by the Prairies on Thursday and rivals Ontario on Sunday.
All matches will take place at Twin Elm Rugby Park and will be streamed live via TSN Sports.
