Day 8 recap of UBC athletes at the Commonwealth Games

Kate Gillis

VANCOUVER – The only UBC Thunderbirds in action at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, today were on the field hockey pitch.

Canada’s women’s team, captained by former T-Bird Kate Gillis of Kingston, Ont., fell 3-2 to Malaysia in a shootout to conclude the Commonwealth tournament in eighth place. Five current and former T-Birds featured in the starting lineup.
Gillis scored in the 55th minute to give her team a 2-1 advantage but Malaysia tied the game 11 minutes later and then prevailed 3-0 in the shootout.
The Canadian men’s team, which has 11 past and present T-Birds, was competitive against another highly regarded side today but ultimately fell 3-1 world No. 5 England.
Down 3-0, former T-Bird and Canadian captain Scott Tupper converted on a penalty corner to get his team on the scoreboard.
Canada has now completed preliminary round play and will face South Africa in the fifth-place game on Aug. 2 at 6:30 a.m. PT.
