Shamrocks finish season with all-island clash

July 31, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – Set to finish in first place for the first time since 2009, the Victoria Shamrocks will close out the regular season on Friday night at 100.3 The Q Centre against the Nanaimo Timbermen.

In a year many considered a ‘retooling’ season, the Shamrocks have exceeded expectations. Victoria came out of the gate strong, stringing together a 10-game undefeated run while young guns became key role players. First round draft pick Jesse King emerged as a star in the making and sits third in team scoring with only nine games played. Names like Bradley Kri, Brandon Bull, Chris Wardle, Ethan Garland and Cody Hagedorn have also solidified themselves as part of the everyday line-up in their first pro season. Veteran scorers Corey Small and Rhys Duch have done their job and sit first and second in league scoring.

Victoria will finish the year the same way they started it – against Nanaimo. The Shamrocks are 1-0-1 versus the Timbermen in 2014. At 100.3 The Q Centre on May 30, Victoria defeated Nanaimo 15-7.
Next week, the Shamrocks will begin defence of their Western Lacrosse Association crown. Victoria is matched up against the New Westminster Salmonbellies in the first round with Game 1 taking place in Victoria on Wednesday, August 6. It will be the first ‘Rocks-‘Bellies playoff series since 2006.

Fri., August 1 | Shamrocks vs. Nanaimo Timbermen | 100.3 The Q Centre | 7:45 p.m.

What you need to know: It is interesting to consider what could have been for the Timbermen this season. Nanaimo has struggled through most of the year but have proven to be a team that can contest anyone. In their second game of the season, the Timbermen held the Shamrocks to a tie, 13-13. Without the services of their top weapon Cody Bremner for all but four games this year and only half a season of Brody Eastwood, the north island team has been shorthanded. Nanaimo will miss the post season for the seventh-straight year.
