ISN – Montréal, July 31, 2014 – Following Sharon Fichman’s (Toronto, ON) withdrawal from
the tournament due to the knee injury she suffered at practice before a World Team
Tennis match, Françoise Abanda (Montréal, QC) received a wildcard into the main draw
of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.
Françoise Abanda will be joining Aleksandra Wozniak and sixth seed Eugenie Bouchard
in the main event. Currently ranked world no.214, Abanda won her first professional
title earlier this season at the Port St. Lucie Challenger at the age of 17. This
year marks her second appearance at the Rogers Cup, since she reached the last round
of the qualifiers in 2012 when she was just 15.
The other wildcard, which was traded with Australia to enable Aleksandra Wozniak to
enter the Australian Open in January, was given to world no.55 Ajla Tomljanovic, who
was born in Croatia but recently announced that she would play for Australia
beginning at this year’s US Open.
With her promotion to the main draw, Abanda leaves a place in the qualifiers for
Carol Zhao (Richmond Hill, ON), who made it through the initial rounds last year in
Toronto. The last wildcard will be awarded to the winner of the pre-qualification.
The pre-qualification final will be presented on Friday at 11 a.m. on National Bank
Court at Uniprix Stadium.
