Weinberger and Maitland top Canadians at FINA Open Water World Cup


LAC-MAGOG – Olympic bronze medallist Richard Weinberger of Victoria and Heather Maitland of Toronto produced top-10 finishes on Friday at the FINA 10 Kilometre Open Water World Cup competition.

In the men’s 10 kilometre, Alex Meyer of the U.S., took the gold in one hour and 55 minutes and 10.63 seconds. Thomas Lurz of Germany was second in 1:55;10.90 and Allan Do Carmo of Brazil third in 1:55:12.94.

Weinberger was eighth in 1:55:17.13 and Nicolas Massé-Savard of Gatineau, Que., of was 15th.

In the women’s race, Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil was victorious in 2:06:41.83, Yu Shi of China was second in 2:06:42.70 and Cecilia Biagoli of Argentina third in 2:06:43.94.

Maitland was ninth in 2:12:32.32 and Carol-Ann Savoie of St-Jerome, Que., 11th.

Weinberger and Maitland are tuning up for the Pan Pacific Championships set for August 21-25 at Gold Coast, Australia.

On Saturday the 34-kilometre FINA World Cup marathon race starts at 8 a.m. on Lac Memphrémagog.
