August 3rd – Victoria, British Columbia ( – The annual Gorge Vale Open was played June 26th and 27th and the Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria. The golf course was playing tough all weekend, which made it hard to go under par. After it was all said and done, it was Gorge Vale member Jared Callbeck who won the tournament after firing rounds of 72 and 68 to win by two strokes over fellow Gorge Vale Member Brent Wilson who had rounds of 72 and 70.

“I played pretty steady until the back nine on Sunday when I birdied ten, eleven, twelve and sixteen, and I had ten putts on the back nine. I figured I had to make 4 birdies to have a chance to win and my putter definitely helped me do that,” mentioned Callbeck who has been a member at the Gorge Vale Golf Club for ten years.

The Gorge Vale Open was also being played in conjunction to the Vancouver Island Professional Tour which gave the field a solid mix of pros and amateurs. Winning the professional side of the tournament and coming in third place overall was Kevin Maxwell, the Director of Golf at the Olympic View Golf Club. Maxwell, played the golf course to two rounds of even par, and finished two strokes back of Wilson.

“It was a tough event. The course was set up great. It was a tough grind the whole time but it felt good to hang in right to the end,” said Maxwell who has a stronghold on the VIPT Order of Merit this year.

There was a two way tie for 4th as Sabastion Blair shot 72 and 73, while Ross Mantell of the Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club fired rounds of 70 and 75 and were both one shot back of Maxwell. Olympic View’s Matt Matheson was in the hunt, but a first round 74 put him behind the eight ball entering the final round on Sunday and ultimately finished in sixth place tie with Phil Kondrak.

Rounding out the top ten was Tai Reynolds had a first round 72, only to back it with a 75 in his second round. Tying Reynolds for ninth place was Lindsay Bernakevitch the Head Professional at the Victoria Golf Club.
