Canada wins silver medal at NORCECA Championships

Aug 4,2014(ISN) – SAN SALVADOR – Canada won the silver medal on Sunday night at the U21 NORCECA (North
and Central America and Caribbean) Championships in men’s volleyball.

The Canadians, who upset the two-time defending champion Americans in Saturday’s
semifinal, lost to Cuba in the gold medal match 29-27, 25-21, 25-21. It was a fifth
U21 NORCECA title for the Cubans. With top-two finishes both countries also grabbed
the available spots for next year’s FIVB World Championships in the age group.

Blake Scheerhorn of Belleville, Ont., led Canada with 11 points while Ryan Nickifor
of Sherwood Park, Alta., and Jeff Ardon of Toronto had 9 and 8 points, respectively,
in the losing effort.

Cuba led in attacks 48-30 while Canada topped in blocks 7-4. Both teams scored three
aces and the winners committed 29 errors to 24 by the Canadians.

Brandon Koppers of Georgetown, Ont., was named the top blocker of the tournament.
