Aug 4,2014(ISN) – MARCOUSSIS, FRANCE – Canada’s Women’s Head Coach Francois Ratier has announced five changes to his starting roster to face Samoa on August 5 in the second game of the IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup in Marcoussis, France.

Lead by winger Magali Harvey’s 26 points, Ratier’s side opened the tournament with a 31-5 victory over Spain on August 1.

Marie-Pier Pinault-Reid, Mary-Jane Kirby and Olivia DeMerchant will each get their first starts of the World Cup in the front row, and Jacey Murphy will start on the blindside flank. Canada’s backline – which was good for all of Canada’s 31 points against Spain – only sees one change, as Brittany Waters slots in on the wing for Julianne Zussman.

Known for being a strong, physical team, Samoa were bested 65-3 by a skilled England team in their tournament opener last Saturday.

“From their game against England we know that they’re an incredibly physical team and strong in the tackle area and we need to match them physically to be successful on Tuesday,” said Ratier from Marcoussis.

The World Cup is happening from August 1 to 17, which means each team will have to play five games in 17 days and attrition plays a large role in preparation.

“We have had a tight turn around between games at Nations Cup and this year at CANAM and in New Zealand, so the girls have developed their own strategies to be prepared for it,” added Ratier.

Fresh off playing two games and helping her team win the National Women’s League tournament in Ottawa, Cindy Nelles has joined Canada in Marcoussis, but will not dress for the Samoa contest.

“The team has a great energy right now and, other than Barbara, there’s no serious injuries, so I think we’re ready to face Samoa on Tuesday and play a strong game.”

This year’s Women’s World Cup is seeing incredible television coverage in Canada on TSN, around the world on various stations. Over 1 million people in France saw the final game of Day One alone.

Kick off is set for 5pm local time (11am ET/8am PT) and you can watch LIVE on TSN.
