Shamrocks begin WLA title defence

August 5, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – The Victoria Shamrocks will begin the 2014 Western Lacrosse Association Playoffs tomorrow night when they welcome the New Westminster Salmonbellies to 100.3 The Q Centre for Game 1.

The Shamrocks enter the WLA’s second season as the reigning champions and the top seed for the first time since 2009. Victoria and New Westminster met three times in the regular season with the Green & White taking all three games.

Victoria finished the regular season with a record of 14-2-2. Snipers Rhys Duch and Corey Small led the WLA in scoring, ending Friday’s season finale tied with 76 points. Goaltender Matt Flindell also had a career-year with 11 wins and new bests in goals-against average and save percentage. The Shamrocks scored a league-high 176 goals while conceding just 124.

Despite being matched up against the league’s top team, the Salmonbellies enter the post-season with some confidence. Since a 13-5 loss at 100.3 The Q Centre on July 18, New Westminster has won four straight-games en route to clinching a playoff spot. They ended the regular season with an impressive 9-3 win over a playoff bound Maple Ridge Burrards squad.
