(ISN) – KENT, August 7, 2014 – Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League,
announced Tuesday the 22 players who will comprise Canada’s National Men’s Summer
Under-18 Team at the 2014 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, August 11 to August 16 in
Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia.
Center Mathew Barzal and defenseman Ethan Bear are two of players that made this
team. Both took part in Canada’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp, August 2
through August 5, at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
“It is great to see both players recognized and selected to the U18 team which is
made up of the best 17 year olds in all of Canada. We look forward to watching
how they do as they represent Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament in the Czech
Republic and Slovakia,” said T-Birds general manager Russ Farwell.
In his rookie season last year Barzal appeared in 59 games and had 14 goals and
40 assists for 54 points. Barzal was selected by the T-Birds in the first round,
1st overall, in the 2012 Bantam Draft. Barzal is eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft.
Barzal was part of Team Canada’s U-18 National Team that won Bronze at the 2014
IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Finland, this past April. He had three goals
and one assist for four points in seven games.
In his rookie season with the T-Birds Bear played in 58 games and registered six
goals and 13 assists, for 19 points. Bear was selected by the T-Birds in the second
round, 25th overall, in the 2012 Bantam Draft. Bear is eligible for the 2015 NHL
